What each part of the VIN means

WBA3A5C55FK123456

Example VIN breakdown (BMW 3 Series)

Pos 1-3

World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI)

Identifies the manufacturer and country of origin. For example, WBA = BMW Germany, SAJ = Jaguar UK, WF0 = Ford Germany.

Pos 4-8

Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS)

Describes the vehicle type, body style, engine type, and series. This section varies by manufacturer but encodes key specifications.

Pos 9

Check digit

A mathematical verification digit used to detect invalid VINs. This helps identify tampered or incorrectly recorded numbers.

Pos 10

Model year

Indicates the model year of the vehicle. Uses a letter/number code system. For example, G = 2016, H = 2017, J = 2018.

Pos 11

Assembly plant

Identifies the specific factory where the vehicle was assembled. Useful for determining if the car was built in the claimed country.

Pos 12-17

Sequential production number

A unique serial number for the individual vehicle. No two cars from the same manufacturer will share this sequence.

Where to find the VIN on your car

Dashboard (windscreen)

Look through the windscreen at the bottom of the driver's side. The VIN should be visible on a small metal plate.

Driver's door frame

Open the driver's door and look at the pillar where the door latches. A sticker or plate should show the VIN.

V5C logbook

The vehicle's registration document (V5C) lists the VIN. This should match the VIN on the physical car.

Chassis stamping

The VIN is stamped into the car's body, usually under the bonnet or in the engine bay. Harder to tamper with than plates.

Frequently asked questions

What is a VIN and where do I find it?

A VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) is a unique 17-character code assigned to every vehicle manufactured since 1981. You can find it in several places: on the dashboard visible through the windscreen (driver's side), on a plate inside the driver's door frame, on the V5C (logbook), and stamped into the chassis. All of these should match.

Why is a VIN check important when buying a car?

A VIN check verifies the vehicle's true identity. Criminals clone cars by swapping the VIN plates of a stolen car with those of a legitimate vehicle. If the VIN on the car does not match the registration or V5C document, the car may be stolen, cloned, or have had its identity fraudulently altered.

What does a VIN check reveal?

A VIN check confirms the vehicle manufacturer, model, year, engine type, and assembly plant. We cross-reference this with the DVLA registration data to verify that the car matches what the registration says it should be. Our premium check also verifies against the Police National Computer for stolen markers.

Can a VIN be tampered with?

Yes, and this is a red flag. VIN plates can be removed and replaced, and chassis stampings can be ground off or re-stamped. Signs of tampering include mismatched rivets, scratched or uneven stamping, plates that do not sit flush, or VIN numbers that differ between locations on the vehicle.

Is the VIN check free?

VIN verification against DVLA data is included in our free check. If you want the full verification including stolen, finance, and write-off checks, the premium upgrade is £4.99. This gives you more data than an HPI check at a quarter of the price.

What is vehicle cloning?

Vehicle cloning is when a criminal takes the identity of a legitimate car (registration plate and VIN) and applies it to a stolen vehicle of the same make, model, and colour. The cloned car appears clean on checks because the data belongs to the legitimate vehicle. A physical VIN inspection, combined with our digital check, is the best way to detect clones.
