Frequently asked questions

How much is road tax in 2026?

For cars registered after April 2017, the standard annual rate is £190 regardless of CO2 emissions. Pre-2017 cars pay based on their CO2 band, ranging from £0 to £695. Electric vehicles are currently exempt but will begin paying from April 2025. Enter your reg plate above to find your exact rate.

How do I calculate my road tax?

Road tax depends on when your car was registered and its CO2 emissions. For post-April 2017 cars, you pay a first-year rate based on CO2, then £190 per year after that. For pre-2017 cars, the rate is based on your CO2 emissions band. Cars costing over £40,000 when new pay an additional £410 per year for the first 5 years.

What is the premium rate supplement?

If your vehicle had a list price over £40,000 when new and was registered after April 2017, you pay an additional £410 per year on top of the standard rate for the first 5 years. After 5 years, you revert to the standard rate. This applies regardless of what you actually paid for the car.

Can I pay road tax monthly?

Yes. DVLA offers monthly direct debit (with a 5% surcharge), six-monthly (with a 5% surcharge), or annual payment. Annual payment is the cheapest option. You can set this up through the DVLA website or by post.

Do I need to display a tax disc?

No. Paper tax discs were abolished in October 2014. DVLA uses electronic records and automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras to check whether vehicles are taxed. You can check your tax status online or by entering your reg plate above.

What happens if I do not tax my car?

Driving an untaxed vehicle on public roads is a criminal offence. Penalties include a fine of up to £1,000, wheel clamping, vehicle seizure, or crushing. DVLA sends automatic reminders before tax expires, but it is your responsibility to renew on time.
