Why a car history check matters

Outstanding finance

If the previous owner still owes money on a PCP, HP, or loan, the finance company can repossess the car from you. Even if you paid the seller in full, the car legally belongs to the lender until the finance is settled.

Stolen vehicle

A stolen car will be seized by the police when discovered, leaving you with no car and no refund. The Police National Computer records all reported thefts. Our premium check verifies the car against this database.

Insurance write-off

A written-off car (Cat A, B, N, or S) has been deemed uneconomical or unsafe to repair by an insurer. Some write-offs can be safely repaired, but hidden structural damage can make others dangerous to drive.

Mileage clocking

Clocking (winding back the odometer) hides wear and inflates the sale price. We compare every MOT odometer reading to detect inconsistencies. A mileage drop between tests is a strong indicator of clocking.

Previous owners

Multiple owners in a short period can indicate problems. One careful owner over many years generally suggests better maintenance. Our premium check reveals the exact number of registered keepers.

VIN mismatch

If the Vehicle Identification Number does not match the registration, the car may be a clone or have had its identity swapped. VIN verification catches this before you hand over your money.

Frequently asked questions

What does a car history check include?

A full car history check reveals whether the vehicle has been reported stolen, has outstanding finance, has been written off by an insurer, has had its mileage clocked, how many previous owners it has had, VIN verification, and the complete MOT test history. Our free check covers MOT analysis, mileage verification, and reliability scoring. The premium check at £4.99 adds stolen, finance, and write-off data from Experian.

Why do I need a car history check before buying?

Buying a car with outstanding finance means the lender can repossess it, even if you paid the seller in full. A stolen car will be seized by the police. A written-off car may have hidden structural damage. A clocked car will have hidden wear. A history check protects you from all of these risks.

How is CarCostCheck different from other history check services?

Most car history checks only cover provenance data: stolen, finance, write-off. We include all of that for £4.99 (compared to £19.99 at HPI), plus we add full MOT history analysis, reliability scoring, running cost estimates, common fault guides, and mileage clocking detection for free.

Where does the history data come from?

Free check data comes from DVSA (MOT History API) and DVLA (Vehicle Enquiry Service). Premium provenance data is provided by Experian, the same data source used by HPI, TotalCarCheck, and other major providers. All government data is licensed under the Open Government Licence v3.0.

Can I get a car history check for free?

Yes. Our free check includes full MOT history analysis, mileage verification, reliability scoring, running costs, and common faults. If you also want stolen, finance, and write-off checks, the premium upgrade is £4.99. This gives you more data than an HPI check at a quarter of the price.

How many previous owners should a car have?

There is no single right answer, but fewer owners generally suggests better care. A 5-year-old car with one owner is ideal. A 10-year-old car with 2-3 owners is normal. More than 5 owners in under 10 years could indicate problems. Our premium check reveals the exact keeper count.
