What Affects Insurance Groups?

Engine size and power

Larger engines produce more power, which correlates with higher risk. A 1.0L engine will be in a much lower group than a 3.0L.

Vehicle brand

Premium brands like BMW, Audi, and Mercedes are typically 5+ groups higher than budget brands like Dacia, Suzuki, and Kia.

Performance trim

GTI, RS, ST, AMG, and similar performance trims push insurance groups up by 3 to 5 points compared to the base model.

Fuel type

Electric vehicles tend to be in higher groups due to expensive battery repairs. Diesel is slightly higher than petrol for the same engine size.

Vehicle age

Older cars (pre-2015) may be in slightly lower groups as their replacement value is lower, though parts availability matters too.

Safety and security

Cars with advanced safety features (AEB, lane assist) and strong security (Thatcham-rated alarms) can be placed in lower groups.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a car insurance group?

Every car sold in the UK is assigned an insurance group from 1 (cheapest to insure) to 50 (most expensive). These groups are set by Thatcham Research and the Association of British Insurers based on factors like engine size, repair costs, safety features, and performance. Lower groups generally mean lower premiums.

How do insurance groups affect my premium?

Insurance group is one of the biggest factors in determining your premium. A car in group 5 could cost half as much to insure as one in group 25 for the same driver. However, your personal details (age, location, driving history, job) also play a major role. The group gives you a good indication of relative cost.

What insurance group are most family cars in?

Most popular family cars fall between groups 10 and 20. For example, a Ford Focus is typically around group 11, a Volkswagen Golf around group 14, and a Toyota Corolla around group 15. Larger SUVs and premium brands tend to be higher, often group 20 to 35.

Why are electric cars in higher insurance groups?

Electric vehicles tend to be placed in higher insurance groups because their batteries and specialist components are expensive to repair or replace. Even a minor collision can damage the battery pack, leading to costly repairs. As EV repair expertise grows and costs come down, groups may reduce over time.

How can I find the cheapest car to insure?

Look for cars in insurance groups 1 to 10. Popular choices include the Volkswagen Up (group 1), Kia Picanto (group 2), Fiat 500 (group 3), and Hyundai i10 (group 3). Smaller engines, budget brands, and avoiding performance trims all help keep the group low. Use our calculator above to check any car.

About Our Insurance Group Estimates

Our insurance group calculator provides estimates based on engine size, fuel type, manufacturer, and model characteristics. Actual insurance groups are determined by Thatcham Research and the Group Rating Panel, who assess each specific variant based on detailed repair cost data, safety test results, and security ratings.

The estimated group should be used as a guide when comparing cars. Your actual insurance premium depends on many additional factors including your age, postcode, claims history, occupation, annual mileage, and voluntary excess. For an exact quote, contact your insurer or use a comparison site.
