What determines the insurance group

Parts cost

The cost of common replacement parts (bumpers, headlights, body panels). Expensive parts push the group higher.

Repair time

How long common repairs take. Cars that are complex to repair (aluminium bodies, advanced electronics) get higher groups.

Performance

Engine power, top speed, and acceleration. Faster cars are more expensive to insure because they are involved in more serious accidents.

Safety features

Cars with advanced safety features (AEB, lane assist, airbags) may get a lower group because they reduce accident severity.

Security features

Factory-fitted alarms, immobilisers, and tracking devices reduce theft risk and can lower the group.

Vehicle value

Higher value cars cost more to repair or replace, pushing the insurance group up.

Frequently asked questions

What are insurance groups and how do they work?

Insurance groups range from 1 to 50, with 1 being the cheapest to insure and 50 the most expensive. Every car sold in the UK is assigned a group by the Group Rating Panel, which includes members from the Association of British Insurers (ABI) and Lloyds Market Association. The group is based on repair costs, performance, safety, and security.

How do I find my car's insurance group?

Enter your registration plate above and we will show you the estimated insurance group for your vehicle. Our estimate is based on the car's make, model, engine size, and year. You can also check on the Thatcham Research website for the official group rating.

What insurance group is the cheapest?

Group 1 is the cheapest to insure. Cars in groups 1-5 typically include small city cars like the Fiat 500, VW Up!, Citroen C1, and Toyota Aygo. These have low-powered engines, cheap parts, and are relatively inexpensive to repair.

Does the insurance group determine my premium?

The insurance group is one of many factors. Your premium also depends on your age, driving history, postcode, annual mileage, occupation, and whether you have no-claims bonus. A low insurance group helps, but a young driver with a Group 1 car may still pay more than an experienced driver with a Group 20 car.

Can I check insurance groups for free?

Yes. Our insurance group estimate is included in every free car check. Enter a reg plate to see the estimated group alongside MOT history, reliability score, running costs, and more. No signup or payment required.

What cars are in the highest insurance groups?

Groups 45-50 include high-performance and luxury vehicles: Porsche 911, BMW M Series, Mercedes AMG models, and supercars. These have powerful engines, expensive parts, and high repair costs. Insurance for these vehicles can be several thousand pounds per year.
