Stolen Motorbike Check: Is the Bike Stolen?
Check a motorbike, scooter or moped against police theft records before you hand over any money. Part of the £4.99 history check.
What the stolen motorbike check covers
Before you buy: match the bike to its paperwork
Most of the protection comes from comparing three things: the bike in front of you, its V5C logbook and the records. Check that the frame number (VIN) stamped on the frame and the engine number match the V5C, and that both match the history check.
Then look at the free report. It shows the colour, engine size and first registration date DVLA holds, and the mileage at every MOT. A bike that does not fit, such as a different colour with no recorded colour change, or a mileage that goes backwards, needs explaining.

Frequently asked questions
How do I check if a motorbike is stolen?▼
Enter the registration and choose the £4.99 history check. It looks for a theft record on the Police National Computer, where the police record vehicles reported stolen in the UK, and flags it straight away if there is one. The data is provided by Experian.
Is a stolen motorbike check free?▼
The stolen check is part of the £4.99 history check, which also covers outstanding finance, write-offs, keepers and 8 more checks. The free report shows the bike's MOT history, mileage, tax and MOT status, which can still reveal a mismatch, for example a DVLA colour or engine size that is not the bike in front of you.
What is the frame number on a motorbike?▼
It is the bike's VIN (Vehicle Identification Number), stamped on the frame. The history check shows the last 4 characters of the VIN on record (2 for rare models) and the engine number on record, so you can compare them with the bike and its V5C logbook.
What happens if I buy a stolen motorbike?▼
The police can seize it, and you can lose both the bike and the money you paid. A private seller of a stolen bike may be impossible to trace afterwards.
What should I do if the check says the bike is stolen?▼
Do not buy it. Call the police on 101 and give them the registration and the seller's details. If you have already paid, contact the police straight away.
Can a stolen motorbike have a clean history?▼
Yes. A stolen bike can be given the identity of another bike (cloned), or the theft may not have been reported yet. That is why the check also gives the end of the frame number (VIN) and the engine number on record, and the plate transfer history: if they do not match the bike, walk away.
