Frequently Asked Questions

How do I compare two cars I am thinking of buying?

Enter the registration plates of both cars into the comparison form above. We pull MOT history, mileage, health score, running costs, and reliability data from official DVSA and DVLA databases in seconds. You can compare up to five cars at once. If you do not have the reg plates, choose from the popular model comparisons below the form.

Can I compare cars by registration plate in the UK?

Yes. Enter any two UK registration plates and we compare them side by side using official DVSA MOT history and DVLA vehicle data. You get MOT pass rates, mileage history, estimated running costs, health scores and common faults for each car, free and without signup.

What is the best way to do a car comparison before buying?

Start with the registration plates of the exact cars you are viewing. A reg-based comparison shows real MOT results, mileage consistency and repair patterns for those specific vehicles, not just generic model averages. Enter both plates above, then add a full history check if you want finance, stolen and write-off status too.

What is the most reliable car to buy used in the UK?

It depends more on the model and year than on the badge. In DVSA data for tests in 2024 (retests included), cars first registered in 2016 (about 8 years old at the test) passed 85% of their MOT tests on average. Pass rates for popular 2016 models: the Honda Jazz 92%, the Volkswagen Golf 90%, the BMW 3 Series 90%, the Toyota Yaris 89%, the Honda Civic 89%, the Suzuki Swift 88%, the Ford Fiesta 81%, the Vauxhall Corsa 81%. Our comparison tool shows MOT pass rates side by side for any two or three cars you are considering.

Which is cheaper to run: petrol or diesel?

For drivers covering under 10,000 miles per year, petrol is almost always cheaper overall. Diesel cars typically cost more to buy and have more expensive fuel system repairs. For high-mileage drivers (20,000+ miles per year), diesel can still save money on fuel costs, but ULEZ and clean air zone charges increasingly apply to older diesels. Use our comparison tool to see estimated annual fuel costs for both fuel types.

Does mileage or age matter more when buying a used car?

It depends on the car. For most modern engines, mileage is a better indicator than age because engines are built to last 150,000+ miles. However, rubber seals, belts, and fluid systems degrade with time regardless of mileage. A low-mileage, older car can have more rubber-related failures than a higher-mileage newer one. Our tool shows both metrics side by side and flags anything unusual in the mileage history.

What does the CarCostCheck health score mean?

The health score is a 0-100 rating based on MOT history, mileage consistency, number of advisories, and failure patterns from official DVSA data. A score above 80 is good. Below 60 suggests the car has had issues and may need attention. The score is calculated from real test results, not manufacturer claims, so it reflects what independent mechanics have actually found.
