Short answer: Do your checks before the test drive, not after. Enter the reg on CarCostCheck for a free MOT, mileage, and reliability check before arranging the viewing. If buying privately, add the £4.99 premium check. At the viewing, inspect the car physically before starting the engine. Only test drive cars that pass all the prior checks. This approach saves time and protects you from emotional decisions.

The Pre-Test-Drive Checklist

Phase 1: Online Checks (Before Leaving Home)

If anything fails at this stage, do not arrange a viewing. You have saved yourself a trip, and the check was either free or £4.99.

Phase 2: At the Car (Before Starting the Engine)

  1. V5C check: Is it in the seller's name at this address? Is it the original document?
  2. VIN match: Check the VIN on the dashboard (through the windscreen) and door frame. Compare to your CarCostCheck report.
  3. Walk around: Check panel gaps, paint consistency, and look for signs of body filler or respray.
  4. Under the bonnet: Check oil level and condition, coolant level, and look for fluid leaks.
  5. Tyres: Check tread depth on all four and the spare. Uneven wear indicates alignment or suspension issues.
  6. Interior: Does the wear match the claimed mileage? A 30,000-mile car should look nearly new inside.

Phase 3: Cold Start (Before Driving)

Ask the seller to start the car from cold in front of you. Watch and listen for:

SignWhat It MeansPotential Cost
Blue smoke from exhaustBurning oil (worn valve seals or piston rings)£500-3,000
White smoke (more than initial condensation)Coolant entering combustion (head gasket)£500-2,000

Phase 4: The Test Drive

Drive for at least 15-20 minutes. Cover:

  • Low speed (residential roads): Listen for suspension knocks, steering rack play, and brake squeal at low speed.
  • Medium speed (30-40mph): Check the car tracks straight, gear changes are smooth, and there are no vibrations.
  • Higher speed (dual carriageway/A-road): Test acceleration, motorway stability, and wind noise. Some problems only appear at speed.
  • Speed bumps: Drive over a few. Listen for clunks (worn bushes, drop links, or loose components).
  • Braking: Find a safe straight road and brake firmly. The car should stop in a straight line with no vibration, pulling, or pedal pulsation.
  • Reversing: Listen for clunks or grinding on full lock in reverse (CV joint issues).

Phase 5: After the Drive

  • Check under the car for new fluid leaks (the car was cold before, now it is warm)
  • Look at the temperature gauge (should be in the normal range, not climbing)
  • Check the exhaust again (blue or white smoke after a drive is more concerning than on cold start)
  • Review your notes against the CarCostCheck report. Do the common faults match anything you experienced?

When to Walk Away

  • Any warning light still on after driving
  • Persistent smoke from the exhaust
  • The seller would not let you cold-start it
  • The seller restricted your test drive route
  • The mileage does not match your CarCostCheck report
  • The VIN does not match
  • The V5C is missing or not in the seller's name

Frequently Asked Questions

What Makes CarCostCheck Different

CarCostCheck is not just a cheaper version of HPI. It is a fundamentally better product that happens to cost 75% less. Here is what you get that HPI does not offer at any price:

  • Real-time market valuation from £2.99, powered by over 650,000 live UK dealer listings. See what your car is actually worth in your local area, how quickly similar cars sell, and how the price compares nationally.
  • Estimated vehicle lifespan: Our AI model analyses over 100 million data points to predict how many years the car has left and the probability of it being on the road in 12 months.
  • Insurance costs by age: See estimated annual premiums for drivers aged 20, 30, 40, and 50. Budget before you buy.
  • Running cost breakdown: Annual fuel, road tax, MOT, predicted repairs, and total cost per month. All calculated for this specific car.
  • Health score (0-100): A single number that tells you the overall condition of the vehicle based on MOT history, advisory patterns, mileage consistency, and maintenance trends.
  • Common faults: Known issues for this exact make and model, drawn from real MOT failure data across thousands of vehicles.
  • 12 free checks: Full MOT history, mileage verification, reliability score, running costs, fuel costs, insurance group, red flag alerts, common faults, recall check, ULEZ compliance, and more. All before you pay a penny.

The premium history check (£4.99) uses the same Experian database as HPI, AA, and RAC. You get identical stolen, finance, and write-off data. The complete bundle (history + valuation) is £6.99, still 65% cheaper than HPI's basic check.
