Key takeaway: Car tax checks are always free. The DVLA's own service and CarCostCheck both return live tax status and cost estimates instantly. Any service charging for a tax check is selling what the government gives away. Use CarCostCheck for the combined report: tax plus MOT plus running costs in one place.

What a Car Tax Check Shows

A car tax check returns three things:

  1. Current status: Is the car taxed, untaxed (SORN), or untaxed (late)?
  2. Tax band: The band the car sits in, based on CO2 emissions and first registration date.
  3. Annual cost: How much you will pay to tax the car for 12 months.

The underlying data comes from the DVLA. It is updated in real time, so if a car was taxed this morning, the check reflects that by lunchtime.

The paid services do not offer anything extra on the tax check itself — they are charging for the other history data (stolen, finance, write-off). If all you want is tax, go free every time.

Why CarCostCheck Beats the DVLA's Own Service

The DVLA service tells you whether a car is taxed. That is it. CarCostCheck uses the same DVLA data but adds:

  • Exact annual tax cost in pounds, calculated from the car's CO2 band
  • Full MOT history with advisories explained
  • Reliability score from 0 to 100
  • Fuel cost estimate based on mileage and engine type
  • Total annual running cost (tax + fuel + MOT + predicted repairs)

One lookup, ten seconds, no payment, no email.

What the 2026 Tax Rates Actually Are

UK vehicle tax works differently depending on when the car was first registered:

  • Before March 2001: Based on engine size. Two bands: under 1549cc (£200) or over 1549cc (£325).
  • March 2001 to March 2017: Based on CO2. 13 bands ranging from £0 (Band A) to £735 (Band M).
  • From April 2017: First year based on CO2 (£10-£2,905 for highest-emitting petrol/diesel), flat £195 from year two onwards. Cars over £40,000 list price pay an additional £425 "expensive car supplement" for 5 years.

All of these bands are calculated automatically in the CarCostCheck free report based on the car's registration date and DVLA CO2 data.

Common Mistakes When Buying a Car

  1. Assuming tax transfers with the car. It does not. As of October 2014, tax is non-transferable. The previous owner gets a refund, and you must tax the car from the day you take ownership.
  2. Driving off untaxed. Even a few miles home can trigger an automatic penalty if ANPR cameras catch the car.
  3. Forgetting the annual cost. A cheap car can have £500+ annual tax if it was registered in the 2010-2017 high-CO2 era. Always check the cost before buying.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the car tax check really free?

Yes, and it always has been. Tax data is released by DVLA under the Open Government Licence and any service charging for it is reselling free data.

How long does a tax check take?

CarCostCheck returns results in under 10 seconds. The DVLA service is similar.

Can I tax a car on CarCostCheck?

No, CarCostCheck only shows you the status and cost. To actually tax a vehicle, use the DVLA's own service with your V5C reference number.
