Do Cheap Car Checks Use the Same Data as HPI? (2026 Answer)

Short answer: yes. Every mainstream UK car history check pulls from the same Experian database. Here is the proof, and why paying £19.99 gets you nothing extra over a £4.99 check.

The Price Ladder, Same Data

CarVertical£33.99Experian + EU sources
HPI£19.99Experian
AA Car Check£9.99Experian
RAC Car Passport£9.99Experian
MyCarCheck£4.99Experian
CarCostCheck£4.99Experian

Short answer: Yes. Every mainstream UK car history check draws its stolen, finance and write-off data from the same Experian database. HPI, AA, RAC, MyCarCheck and CarCostCheck all query the same records. Paying £19.99 for an HPI-branded check does not get you better data than a £4.99 CarCostCheck. It gets you the same data at four times the price.

The Source Behind Every Major UK Car Check

UK vehicle history data is consolidated by Experian, one of the three major UK credit reference agencies. Experian aggregates records from:

  • Finance companies who register outstanding HP, PCP, and logbook loans against specific vehicles.
  • Insurance companies who report total-loss claims with categories Cat A, B, S and N.
  • The Police National Computer (PNC) which flags vehicles reported stolen.
  • The DVLA for plate and colour change records.
  • Scrap and salvage yards reporting vehicles marked for destruction.

When you buy a car check from any mainstream UK provider, they send the registration plate to Experian's system and return the same data that anyone else sending the same query would receive. The data is not proprietary to any brand.

The "Data Source" column tells the story. Every mainstream provider queries Experian. The results for a given car are mechanically identical regardless of which brand you pay.

Why the Price Differences Exist

If the data is the same, why does the market support such a wide price range? Three reasons:

  1. Brand recognition. HPI has been a household name since 1938. Many buyers assume "HPI check" is a specific product rather than a generic term.
  2. Marketing spend. CarVertical funds heavy YouTube influencer partnerships. HPI runs national advertising. Budget services like CarCostCheck spend nothing on mass marketing and pass the savings on.
  3. Guarantee policies. HPI's guarantee promises compensation if you are sold a stolen or financed car despite a clean report. The terms are tight and payouts are rare, but the guarantee supports the premium price.

None of these reasons relate to data quality. The actual database records returned are the same.

Where the Providers Genuinely Differ

The real differences show up outside the core Experian data:

  • MOT history analysis. Only CarCostCheck decodes MOT advisories in plain English, flags repeated issues, and estimates repair costs. HPI and AA provide no MOT commentary at any price.
  • Reliability scoring. CarCostCheck gives every car a 0-100 reliability score based on real MOT pass rates for that make, model and year. HPI does not attempt this.
  • Running costs. CarCostCheck calculates annual fuel, road tax, insurance group and predicted repair costs for the exact vehicle. No major competitor includes this.
  • Common faults. CarCostCheck lists known issues for each make and model from aggregate MOT failure data. HPI, AA and RAC do not.
  • DVSA recall data. Outstanding manufacturer recalls appear in CarCostCheck's free report. Most competitors do not check for these.
  • Market valuation. CarCostCheck's £2.99 valuation uses over 650,000 live UK dealer listings to show what a car is actually worth locally and nationally. HPI does not offer real-time valuation data.

All of the above are included free or at the £4.99 tier with CarCostCheck. They do not exist in the £19.99 HPI product.

The Honest Verdict

Cheap car checks use the same data because they access the same database. The sole exception is CarVertical's European import history, which only matters if you are buying a car that was originally registered outside the UK. For a standard UK-registered vehicle, paying more than £4.99 gets you branding, not information.

If you were choosing based purely on data coverage, CarCostCheck at £4.99 delivers more than HPI at £19.99 because it adds MOT analysis, running costs and reliability scoring on top of the same Experian provenance data. The price difference is pure brand premium.
