Free Outstanding Finance Check UK: The Truth (and the £4.99 Alternative)

Sites advertising a 'free outstanding finance check' are misleading. The finance industry register sits behind a paywall and no provider can give it away free. Here's why, and the cheapest legitimate way to check (£4.99).

Quick answer: No, there is no free outstanding finance check in the UK. The finance industry register charges per query and no provider has access to it for free. Sites advertising a 'free finance check' are showing you DVLA data (which doesn't include finance) and trying to upsell you. The cheapest legitimate finance check is £4.99 with CarCostCheck — same data as HPI's £19.99 check.

Same data as HPI, £4.99 instead of £19.99

Outstanding finance, stolen, write-off (Cat A/B/S/N + legacy C/D), VIN, plate transfers, previous keepers. Sourced via Experian from MIAFTR, CUE and the finance industry register — same as HPI's. Plus full MOT history, mileage check and reliability score.

Why no free finance check exists

Outstanding finance information sits in the finance industry's shared register, an industry database that records every PCP, HP, conditional sale and logbook loan secured against a UK vehicle. Lenders pay to register and pay to query. Every car-check provider that returns finance data — HPI, AA, RAC, MyCarCheck, CarCostCheck — pays per query through Experian's UK vehicle data feed. No provider can give that away for free because every check costs them.

What you CAN check for free is DVLA data: make, model, year, tax status, MOT status, fuel type, CO2. Useful, but it does NOT tell you whether the car is on finance.

Read the small print on any site claiming a free finance check. The line "the full report (including finance) is £X.XX" is always there, usually after you've entered the reg plate.

The cheapest real finance check

CarCostCheck premium at £4.99. It queries the same Experian-sourced finance industry register that HPI uses and returns:

  • Outstanding finance status (yes/no)
  • Finance type (PCP, HP, conditional sale, logbook loan)
  • Lender name
  • Agreement start date
  • Plus stolen, write-off (Cat A/B/S/N + legacy C/D), VIN verification, plate transfers, previous keepers
  • Plus the full free report (MOT history, mileage check, reliability, running costs)

HPI charges £19.99 for the same finance data, plus auto-enrols you in a £39/year HPI Watch subscription unless you cancel. CarCostCheck is £4.99 once, no subscription, no email list.

What happens if you skip the finance check

If you buy a car with undisclosed finance against it, the finance company can repossess the car from you. They are the legal owner until the agreement is paid off; the seller you bought from never owned the car outright to sell. Section 27 of the Hire Purchase Act 1964 offers limited "private purchaser in good faith" protection, but it's narrow (HP and conditional sale only, not all finance types), hard to prove, and not guaranteed.

The Consumer Credit Trade Association estimates roughly 1 in 4 used cars in the UK has outstanding finance against it at the point of sale. Most settle properly at handover; a fraction don't. A £4.99 check before paying is the cheapest insurance against the fraction that doesn't.

How to use the £4.99 check at the right moment

  1. Run a free CarCostCheck reg plate lookup — MOT history, mileage, reliability score for free.
  2. If the free report looks good, run the £4.99 premium for finance + stolen + write-off.
  3. If finance shows outstanding, ask the seller to settle BEFORE you pay. Reputable sellers will; the finance company will issue a settlement letter.
  4. If the seller can't or won't settle, walk away. The deal isn't viable for you.

Total cost of due diligence: £4.99. Cost of skipping it: potentially the entire purchase price.
